Sequel to Wings of Desire. The Berlin Wall collapsed. Cassiel is an angel, like his one-time partner Daniel who chose to become human out of love for aerialist Marion. Cassiel also decides to become human, but everything goes wrong.

An uptight and conservative woman, working on a tenure as a literature professor at a large urban university, finds herself strangely attracted to a free-spirited, liberal woman who works at a local carnival that comes to town.

Michaela Destrez receives a promising job offer abroad - but when she meets circus manager Martin Kier she falls under the spell of life in the Big Top, and decides to train as a circus rider. Martin stretches Michaela's abilities to the limit during the training sessions, however, and the circus employees regard her as an unwelcome intruder. Isabella, who is an excellent rider and is also suffering from unrequited love for Martin, is particularly jealous of Michaela. Very soon, however, Michaela becomes the star of the circus, and Martin's wife.

October 1925. Inventor Carl Akerblom, an admirer of Franz Schubert, is a patient in the pyschiatric yard of a hospital in Uppsala. Together with another patient, Pr. Osvald Vogler, they set up a film project: the living talkie. Before long, they set off on a frantic tour with their film, ‘The Joy of the Joyous Girl’.

To make matters worse, the boy falls in love with a mermaid.

The twin sisters Helena and Irene are born in Helsinki during World War II. A few months later their mother, Sirkka, leaves the girls in the care of their grandmother, an old communist, and runs away with a German soldier. Their life under the protection of their grandmother and the teachings of communism ends first with the death of Stalin, then with that of their grandmother. The girls are eight years old when they are put in an orphanage. Their mother shows up at the orphanage in the company of Ramon, a Spanish trapeze artist. They are on a talent search for a German circus.

A gay pastor is murdered somewhere in South Africa. In taking on the identity of the victim, the murderer cannot foresee the sequence of events which, once set in motion, are inescapable, not only for him but also for all the town’s inhabitants. Beneath th apparent workings of justice, contradictory forces are at war…
